Surveillance systems usually include, or may be exclusively comprised of, closed-circuit televisions (CCTV). But other sensors and access controls can and should be a part of the surveillance system mix.

Surveillance systems monitor the behavior and activities of people within a designated area. This can include observation from a distance by means of electronic equipment, such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), or interception of electronically transmitted information, such as internet traffic.

Surveillance can be used for learning about traffic patterns, to prevent crime, the protection of a process, person, group or object, or to investigate a crime.

Surveillance systems are most effective when used in conjunction with biometrics and access controls.
